And so it is that my cookbook collection is haunted by the ghosts of fevers past, a shelf of turn-of-the-century volumes each of which concerns itself, at least in part, with the care and feeding of the ill. “Invalid Cookery” was once a standard chapter in cookbooks of the Victorian era, a time when most health care was provided at home, though as a concept it has nearly disappeared today.

I have never had a driver’s license. I have always had two mothers. As opposed to dismissing my utter fear of driving, I like to believe that this attachment to public transit was born out of a deeper history. I began with a bus. Or rather, a fleet of them. My parents drove trolleys. It was a good way to meet girls and they got to wear uniforms while navigating the steep hills of Seattle.

One of my old coworkers once went as a garden gnome. She basically just dressed herself as a gnome (very comfortable and warm) and carried around a plot of fake grass that she would stand on from time to time. Sort of brilliant! This could easily be reinterpreted as a “sexy” garden gnome, but really, who can beat wearing a cozy drinking suit AND having a clean place to plop yourself down?

While I was hostessing the summer after my sophomore year of college, my boss would play two John Mayer albums over and over and over again. As in, I had to wear pleated khaki pants, an over-sized, tucked-in Izod polo and listen to John Mayer for the entirety of my shift. I would get emotional about my boyfriend and my future all by myself while rolling baskets of place settings before the dinner shift and thinking, “I hope no one ever finds out about me & John Mayer right now.” One afternoon, while listening to “Why Georgia?” I looked out the window to see a dark, skeletal figure peddling toward me on a bike as old as he was. The first pair of words to enter my mind were “Ichabod Crane.” The second were “John Waters.” And indeed, it was. Waters made a little loop around the parking lot and motioned for me to come outside. I smoothed my chinos and scurried. “When are you folks opening for dinner this evening?” he asked. I did my best to answer while sincerely questioning my grasp on reality.

There are the friends you meet for the occasional happy hour, and there are friends with whom you have longstanding Taco Tuesdays. Taco Tuesday means a bottle of wine for each person and peeling back the business-casual mask of the weekday while relaying mortifying tales of performed adulthood to one another. You hit reply all. You cried at your desk. You said “I love you” when you were unprepared or drunk or sober. Any day can be Taco Tuesday. These are the people who fill in your blanks. These are the right people.

A West Seattle girl at heart, there?s nothing like wandering into Bakery Nouveau, sleepy-eyed and bed-headed, for a fantastic morning-after Americano (courtesy of Lighthouse Roasters) and a twice-baked almond croissant. Not since I was introduced to their preferred style of kissing in the sixth grade have the French done so much for the quality of my love life.

By now, it should be obvious that Twitter is a major player on the street food scene. In the past we’ve warned against using Twitter as a marketing tool for essentially spamming your consumers. Mobile vendors are prime examples of how businesses can authentically harness social media in the right way. Snacks! has no website, just a Twitter account and Facebook page suggesting its clientele are ahead of the curve when it comes to communicating online. Just this week Snacks! urged Twitter fans to come in for root beer floats made with cane sugar and their signature soft serve (assembled in the bottle). For those seeking more traditional treats, Snacks! is also offering up seasonal flavors of Molly Moon’s ice cream by the pint.
