One More Salute to Vanity

The hibernation researcher Lynn Rogers once crawled into a den and pressed his ear to a bear’s chest to count its heartbeats. The naturalist Bernd Hein­rich went out into the woods in 9-degree cold, chased a flying squirrel from its nest and replaced it with a hot potato. (So well insulated was the nest that the potato held its heat for half an hour.)
